Cisco Nexus 9K – Hardware Data Sheet (NX-OS)

Cisco Nexus has two distinct models the 9300 and the 9500 Series both offering Layer 2 and 3 nonblocking ports ranging in speeds from 1 to 100GbE.

  • The 9300 is a fixed port switch range designed for top of rack (ToR) deployment.
  • The 9500 is a modular chassis supporting up to 16 line cards designed for spine or Aggregation deployment

The Nexus 9K series of hardware is available in two models ACI and NX-OS. ACI can only be used as part of the Cisco ACI SDN solution. For more information on ACI see Cisco ACI Overview. This post focuses purely on the NX-OS

Cisco Nexus 9300 Series Switches

NOTE: The 9396 and 93128 require additional uplink modules, these modules are detailed in the next section

Uplink Module

Uplink modules are not optional an are required for normal switch operation. Any chassis that requires an uplink module can choose any one of the following three modules:

Cisco Nexus M6PQ-E

Cisco Nexus M12PQ-E

Cisco Nexus N9K-M4PC-CFP2

Cisco Nexus 9500 Series Switches

The 9500 is a modular chassis supporting up to 16 line cards, 2 supervisors, 2 controllers, 6 fabric modules and 10 power supplies. It offers Layer 2 and 3 nonblocking ports ranging in speeds from 1 to 100GbE.

Typical deployment scenarios for the 9500 are as either an end of row (EoR), traditional aggregation layer switches or Spine switches in a CLOS fabric.

NOTE: As with all Chassis switches it is a bit of a laundry list in order to identify all of the components you require, This post is purely based on throughput and as such does not make any reference to power, cooling or systems controllers which would be required for functionality.
